Getting Set for Item Setup at Walmart

The trickiest part about item setup is trying to understand what went wrong when you’ve followed the process to a T. While we haven’t captured everything needed for Item Setup, we have collected some of the most helpful resources for suppliers when setting up new items at Walmart. What’s the difference between GS1 and a data pool provider?

Know Your ID Types

To successfully set up your items, its vital that the correct information is in the right place and format. GTINs, UPCs, and EANs are often interchangeable however, Walmart requires specific formats and uses for each ID Type. For example, the GTIN barcode is one of many required data fields on each vendor pack that has more than one selling unit in the case.

Walmart requires suppliers to adhere to the following guidelines:

  1. Not-for-profit organization that develops and maintains global standards for business communication.
  2. Organization that suppliers purchase their GTINs from. All GTINs are registered and specific to the item through the structure of the GTIN.

A. Number System Character:

0: regular grocery and all general type goods

1: regular grocery and all general type goods

2: random-weight items such as meat and produce

3: health related and drug items

4: in-store, in-house marked non-food items

5: manufacturer’s coupon

B. Manufacturers’ ID Code:

5 digits

C. Item Code:

5 digit numbers assigned by manufacturer, unique to each item.

D. Check Digit:

1 digit; serves as a numerical check of the other eleven digits.

Catalog Item Confirmation Message (CIC)

The message received when you publish data from your data pool provider.

Global Location Number (GLN)

The message received when you publish data from your data pool provider.

Publication Types

  • Correction: Results when a “correctable” attribute is edited with an item modify transaction (GTIN allocation rules require a new GTIN if certain attributes change)​.
  • Initial Load: Connect an existing, not synchronized, item to a data pool provider, or large increase.
  • Modify: A full refresh of existing item data.
  • New Item: To set up a new item or new trade item configuration under a GTIN.

    Removing synchronization of item data:
  • Delete: Permanent removal
  • Withdraw: Temporary removal
